It’s hard to imagine a time when Tinuola Sowunmi wasn’t an A-List Entrepreneur, but ten years ago he was a frustrated, a little-known entrepreneur who couldn’t seem to breakthrough. Despite his prodigious talents and business prowess, as of his 35th birthday Tinuola Sowunmi could claim nothing more notable than a small scale business. Intensely discouraged, he turned to alcohol and quickly developed a dependency on drugs. Within a year, he hit rock bottom. When his wife and seven-year old daughter discovered him passed out on the kitchen floor, there was no denying that he had lost control. After finding Tinuola Sowunmi unconscious, his wife Folake immediately checked him into a rehabilitation clinic. For the first time, Tinuola was forced to face up to his anger and discouragement, and he began to make gradual life changes. To his credit, he submitted himself to the recovery process, and with the encouragement of his family, friends and well-wishers; he was able to break his addiction. Less than twelve months later, he finally achieved stardom in his entrepreneurship career. From then on, his reputation grew steadily, and his career flourished. Today, he is regarded as one of Oyo’s finest and hardest-working business mogul. What can we learn from Tinuola Sowunmi’s journey? No one is immune to discouragement. Regardless of your personality, potential, or position you will encounter discouragement at some point in life and in other area of your endeavours. Our response to discouragement holds the key to our future. I’ve noted two types of people in the world: Splatters and Bouncers. When splatters hit the bottom they land with their back and stick like glue. No matter what you try to say and do, there’s no use trying to pick up a splatter that has fallen flat for they will not respond to the challenge positively. But, bouncers on the other hand, pull themselves together and rebound after hitting the bottom. Give them a little bit of encouragement, and they will ride it back to the top one more time. Everyone who falters has a choice: are you going to get up or give up? The question is yours to proffer answers to. For, the difference between the Splatters and Bouncers lies in their attitude. I mean their personal perception of life. For, splatters bemoan their fate and blame others for their problems and failures. While bouncers learn fast from their failures and find supporters to help them recover. Our influence can be pivotal in rescuing others from self-destructive discouragement. Imagine if Tinuola Sowunmi had not been married or associated with well meaning people (friends and well-wishers). He might never have checked into rehab, he might never have beaten his drug and alcohol excesses, and the world might never have been so rich by his business acumen. Thankfully for Tinuola, he was surrounded by people who loved him and encouraged him as he recovered from substance abuse. In leadership, inevitably you will cross paths with people that are downtrodden. When you do, your encouragement can be a lifeline to save or lift them from spiraling into self-destructive despair. Here are steps you can apply to counteract discouragement: 1) Guide Them to the Right Perspective People who are discouraged oftentimes seem to be trapped under a black raincloud or shambles. Everywhere they turn appears to be dark, and they cannot see rays of light anywhere. As a leader, you can point to the positives and help them to keep hope alive. In addition, you can assist the discouraged person in properly interpreting setbacks. Remind them that just because they experienced failure doesn’t mean they are a failure. 2) Connect Them to the Right People You may encounter people whom you have limited ability to encourage because you can’t relate to their area of discouragement. For instance, if you’ve never been in sales, it can be hard to cheer up a dispirited salesperson. However, within your network, you may know someone who has undergone similar frustrations in sales and would be glad to share some encouragement from his or her experience. Also, the depth of someone’s discouragement may necessitate professional assistance. In the middle of his alcohol and drug addiction, Tinuola Sowunmi didn’t need a pep talk from a buddy as much as he needed medical care and attention from a licensed counselor. Sometimes the best service you can do for someone who has hit rock bottom is to persuade him or her to get help – I mean professional help. 3) Restore Them with the Right Words Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones, at onetime the greatest heart surgeon in England, says this in his excellent work, Spiritual Depression, its Cause and Cure: and I quote, “Most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself rather than talking to yourself.” Think about it. When you’re discouraged, you wake up in the morning and right away, there are streams of thought coming into your mind. You haven’t invited them; you didn’t ask for them; you are not consciously doing anything to produce them; they just come! They start talking to you. As a leader, you can help people filter unfounded fears and unwarranted worries from their inner dialogue. After doing so, you have the opportunity to speak affirming and encouraging words that can take the place of negative thoughts. Once people change their thinking, their attitudes and actions eventually follow. I will like to conclude with this piece, regardless of your personality, potential, or position you will encounter discouragement at some point in life but I charge you to develop and get your mind set and you shall overcome no matter what happened. You will make IMPACT!!!

Recently, I wrote on “Beyond Positive Thinking in 2012”, as one of the tools and techniques that guarantee greatness and success in any field of human endeavour. But today, I deemed it fit to bring to you this article “The Force of Creative Visualization which is the act of using your mind and natural creative imagination to actually manifest those things that you wish to achieve most in your life. Over the years this has been seen as a powerful technique that has the tendency to turn the life of every man around for good. It is ones ability to bring about wonderful events, circumstances and accomplishments in one’s life just by thinking about them and creating a true, strong and vivid picture of what it is you desire and building on your inner strength to pursue such pictures and images.

Creative visualization is more than just positive thinking, it has to do with you going deeper into your mind to find out facts that were inside of you for many years through the relaxing state of your mind which can only happen through what I called ‘silent visualization’.
The very act of creative visualization brings about wonderful events in one’s life which occurs without you being aware. Some people call it coincidence but there is no such thing as coincidence in this world. We are responsible for what happens to us, with us, through us and by us. In fact, all that happens throughout our lives. That is to say, if you must enjoy true greatness and success in this year 2012, then you must make yourself open to Creative Visualization. One of the acceptable tools and techniques that can help you to tap into the picture that makes up your future and it can also help guarantee the reality of your dreams.
Our brain and mind are the most powerful forces on this Earth and the more we learn to use them to our positive advantage the better our lives can be. Like Winston Churchill said long time ago, that if a man makes a decision to do anything, heaven and earth will join force to make it happen.
It is in agreement with the above that, I began using the tools of creative visualization over ten years ago and it has just become a natural part of my everyday life and also at the same time serve as a fuel to the direction of my dreams, passion and vision and helping me to build upon my positive mental attitude for success. This works because it keeps me focused on thinking of things that I truly desire in my life and this in turn keeps me consistently working towards the actualization of that which I want most in life.
When I get out of bed in the morning I focus as hard as I can on a particular major goal I have set for myself. I visualize the achievement of that goal in complete detail and beforehand I see them happen in totality and reality. Throughout the process of the visualization I remain completely relaxed and just focus all my energy on the actualization of my visualization.
Once you have chosen your desire, object or event you want in life, visualize them as clearly as possible. Imagine it as though it has already occurred, exactly as you want it to be. Focus on them with all your emotions and visualize it as clearly and as vividly as you possibly can.
By using creative visualization you are sending a signal out into the universe and that signal will attract whatever positive events you want into your life. This has been passed down throughout history, it is called “The Law of Attraction” and it does not discriminate, it works the same for everyone. This is based on the fact that, when you send out positive, I mean expectant positive thoughts positive circumstances will begin to appear in your life that will help spur you to the actualization of what you have focused your mind on.
My advice is; keep all negative thoughts from entering your mind for this can destroy the entire visualization process. Your subconscious mind will not act on anything positive if there are negative thoughts associated with it in anyway. Only until you try to erase such negative thoughts from your thought system.
Take control of that inner voice within your mind and see to it that all your self-talk are positive. For Creative Visualization can help to bring about a true sense of peace and tranquility. It is a very positive act which can leave you filled with positive emotions that can lead you to your dreamland.
Congratulations!!!

THE POWER OF GOAL SETTING

It is not position that makes the leader; it is the leader that makes the position via accurate goal setting. This is because; when it comes to identifying a leader, don’t listen to the claim of the person professing to be the leader, don’t examine his/her credentials, title, status or facial appearance but, check his/her influence which could only be exhibited through an unflinching goal setting. For the proof to true leadership which is accrued to goal setting is found in the follower-ship.

Goals are vision with feet. Goals are set of specific, measurable steps to achieve one’s vision life. It will deliver a leader from crisis management and help the leader to know the right direction whenever the vision seems blurred. You switch from ‘fire fighting’ to ‘fire prevention’.

The most effective goals in the history of mankind are stated in the present tense, and yet are entirely believable to be you. They are worded which make your goal now to be in the process of happening in the course of pursuing your life purpose – not that it has already been achieved, which is not believable. “I am a great leader or I am a millionaire” is stated in the present, yet it is something your conscious and subconscious mind will have difficulty to agree with. But in reality, you are struggling to pay your rent every month. Here is where the power of goal setting and positive affirmation lies; it has worked for me and millions of people out there. Once you start affirming your goal’s list positively, naturally over the time they start getting clearer and clearer with the pictures of those goals in view – and those pictures started to include some very specific step to take that will in turn guarantee the actualization of your dreams.

6 questions that will help a leader establish some long range goals over the next 10 years:

1.What do I want to do?

2. What do I want to be?

3. What do I want to see?

4. What do I want to have?

5. Where do I want to go?

6. What would I like to share?

When a man is able to have a clearer understanding about this all time questions that bring about an outstanding lifestyle then you are on your way to making impact and achieving greatness.

A man with a goal set for his/her life has a ‘yes’ face, because; they inspires their followers to greatness and greater heights. Goals are essential keys to achievement and success in life. But, it is so touching that, of only 3% of people have goals and write them down; 10% more have goals but keep them in their heads; while the rest 87% drift through life without definite goals or plans – John C. Maxwell. They do not know where they are going and allows other people to drive them through life by taking the driver’s seat of their destiny. Most importantly, the 3% accomplish from 50-100 times more during their lifetime more than the 10%.

To cap it all, goal setting is an on-going discipline which generates greater respect for the goal setter. You have to avail yourself to setting goals if you must achieve greatness and actualize your vision in life.

You will succeed and become great!

                 THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LEADERSHIP…

It has been my greatest honour and priviledge over the past decade as an ambitious growing young man to mix, mingle and at the same time to be mentored and tutored by many men and women in different field of leadership within and outside the country. It has always been a fascination as I personally come to discover that, people naturally and without stress follow these leaders base on their leadership styles and qualities.

If there should ever be anytime in the history of our generation where we should be studying leadership principles is now. This was in marriage with the fact that, the greatest and daunting challenge of this present world is tied to leadership. I mean leadership on every field of our daily live. That is, the greatest need of the hour is a clarion call for constructive, creative, effective, positive and productive leadership. The church, industry, education, labour and government are all starving and at the same time yearning for positive and qualitative leadership. It is indisputable that, we have a large number of people filling leadership position but the confronting question is; how many of this leaders are fulfilling the core and essence of their leadership?  The above question now brings me to share with you the definitions of leadership in this context.

The concept of leadership over the years has been defined by many authors and leaders from different field and background.

  • Ø “Leadership is the discipline of deliberately exerting special influence within a group to move it towards goals of beneficial performance that fulfill the group’s real needs” – John Haggai
  • Ø “Leadership is:
    • Knowing what to do next;
    • Knowing while that is important; and
    • Knowing how to bring appropriate resources to bear on the need at hand” – Bobb Bichl
    • Ø “Also, leadership is an awesome responsibility, the process of encouraging and helping others to work enthusiastically towards achieving a set objectives” – Bob Baes.

Having known what leadership is, the next thing that comes to mind is; who is a leader? This question is a captivating one that requires an open answer in as much as true leadership is concerned.

  • Ø “A leader is someone who cause people to take effective action” – Howard Hendricks
  • Ø “A leader is one who guides and develops the activities of others and seeks to provide continual training and direction” – Ted Engstrom
  • Ø Succinctly, a leader is one:
    • Who knows the way,
    • Goes the way and;
    • Shows the way.

My beloved friends, you too can know the way, go the way and lead or show the way. But, all you need to do is for you to become ‘UNLEARN’ so as to, ‘LEARN’.

                                         WHO YOU ARE…

Most time in life we get to the bend of the road – Yes! But the fact still remains that, the bend of the road in life does not signify the end; it’s just a traffic jam. So to say, we are all here on earth for a given purpose, which whenever I sit down in my closet to ponder on, I always come to the realization that, we all have our different assignment in life which we must bring to fulfillment by putting everything at our disposal (potential, skill , knowledge and talent) into adequate use. That is, every man and woman irrespective of our colour, tribe, race, affinity and culture; we are individually created, designed, fashioned and also wired for a specific task which its fulfillment is of utmost necessity to our creator – (The Infinite Intelligence). All of the above revelation brings me to the conclusion of who you are:

  • Ø You are somebody’s life
  • Ø You are somebody’s hope
  • Ø You are somebody’s strength
  • Ø You are somebody’s lifting
  • Ø You are somebody’s might
  • Ø You are somebody’s energy
  • Ø You are somebody’s idea
  • Ø You are somebody’s inspiration
  • Ø You are somebody’s motivation
  • Ø You are somebody’s success
  • Ø You are somebody’s greatness
  • Ø You are somebody’s empowerment
  • Ø You are somebody’s force for action
  • Ø You are somebody’s purpose
  • Ø You are somebody’s teacher
  • Ø You are somebody’s mentor
  • Ø You are somebody’s role-model
  • Ø You are somebody’s passion
  • Ø You are somebody’s healing
  • Ø You are somebody’s joy
  • Ø You are somebody’s smile
  • Ø You are somebody’s progress
  • Ø You are somebody’s light
  • Ø You are somebody’s breakthrough
  • Ø You are somebody’s happiness
  • Ø You are somebody’s power
  • Ø You are somebody’s peace
  • Ø You are somebody’s drive
  • Ø You are somebody’s focus
  • Ø You are somebody’s channel to the throne
  • Ø You are somebody’s worth
  • Ø You are somebody’s deliverer
  • Ø You are somebody’s glory
  • Ø You are somebody’s influence
  • Ø You are somebody’s eyes
  • Ø You are somebody’s ears
  • Ø You are somebody’s breathe
  • Ø You are somebody’s savior
  • Ø You are somebody’s love

You should make yourself all things to all men, because you are a solution to your generation.
